ALC Workshop: Active Learning: How Do We Get Our Students On Board?

Facilitator

  • Eugenia Etkina, Distinguished Professor, Graduate School of Education and Department of Physics and Astronomy

Description

Research indicates a discrepancy between the teaching methods that help our students learn and their own perceptions of the methods that are effective for their learning. Active engagement in the construction of knowledge was found again and again superior to passive listening to lectures, and yet, our students value the latter more. How do we help them get on board with effective teaching methods? Is it important that the students value and appreciate interactive engagement in their classes?

In this workshop, led by Eugenia Ekina of the Graduate School of Education, the participants will learn how the knowledge of the brain explains the success of active learning and the importance of student understanding and appreciation of those methods. They will also learn how to help our students realize that they are already expert learners and apply their expertise to their university studies. The participants will engage in the activities that they can later run with their students and discuss the adaptations for the courses that they teach.
